Summer’s almost here, and you’re looking forward to going on vacation so you can “let your hair down.” While enjoying some free time, you still want to be sure to maintain your oral health. What can you do to ensure the protection of your teeth and gums? Continue reading to get 5 simple summer oral health tips!

#1 – Drink Plenty of Water

Water serves several purposes. Not only does it help to maintain homeostasis in your vital organs, blood and other tissue, but it also aids in your oral health. Drinking an adequate amount of water helps your body produce saliva. One of its purposes is to help flush leftover debris from your mouth after consuming food or beverages. By drinking at least half your body weight in ounces of water, you’ll be helping to produce enough saliva to maintain moisture inside your mouth.

#2 – Bring Some Mouthwash with You

If you have a busy day planned (which is often the case when on vacation), be sure to bring a small bottle of mouthwash with you while moving about. While it may not always be feasible to brush and floss your teeth after eating a meal or snack, you can at least rinse your mouth with the solution to help flush away some of the lingering residue. Then, when you’re back to your hotel room or home, you can perform your normal dental hygiene routine.

#3 – Watch Out for the Bubbles

You may be tempted to drink a few carbonated beverages, but you should be aware that the acids they contain could be detrimental to your teeth; they are known to eat away at tooth enamel (the hard-outer layer) over time. If you treat yourself on occasion, be sure to wait about 30 minutes, and then brush and floss your teeth.

#4 – Use a Straw

When you choose to indulge in a sweet, adult or carbonated beverage, it’s safer to use a straw. It’s also a good idea to finish your drink quickly to prevent any sugar gathering and lingering on your teeth.

#5 – Enjoy the Local Fruits

During the summer, you can find a host of colorful and delicious fruits to try out. Inquire about the local delights and treat yourself to them. This is a great way to satisfy a sweet craving while limiting the harmful effects that processed sugar can have on your teeth and gums.

Now that you have a game plan, the next step is to execute and enjoy yourself while doing it. Therefore, this can be one of the most exciting and healthiest summers ever!
